Persepolis essay ideas

One idea for the essay is Marjane’s loss of innocence’s, how the Islamic revolution and the war took away a normal childhood for her.  I want to compare the life she had with the one she might have had. And I want to show events in her life made her grow up faster and how they impacted her. Chapters I would use would be:

“The Party”- She becomes violent, she wants to punish for the million people dead.

“The Heroes”- She hears the stories of torture. Then she uses this while she plays with other kids.

“The Trip”- Marjane goes to a demonstration, where women were getting stabbed.

“The Cigarette”- Shows her rebellious side.

Another idea for the essay would be about their religion. I would show how religion impacted Marjane’s life. How god was a comfort to her then to when she lost all her faith. I would also compare the situations the country is in after and before the shah and how religion came into play, and how it restricted them more than when the shah was still king. The chapters I would use would be:

“The Veil”- Shows the start of Western vs. Religion. Boys and girls are separated in school. And this chapter shows how religious Marjane is and her family.

“The Bicycle”/ “The Sheep”-  In these two chapters it is the start of Marjane losing her faith and when she actually loses it.

“The Trip”- She was told to lie about praying. The universities were being closed. Shows more of western vs. religion.

 Another idea for the essay would be about the treatment towards women.  How their religion discriminates against women. I would compare how it was then to how it is now in Iran. The chapters I would use would be:

“The Veil”- This chapter shows how their religion discriminates against women. It shows women fighting against it.

“Kim Wilde”- This chapters introduces the guardians of the revolution the women’s branch.

“The Trip”- Marjane’s mother gets assaulted by men.

“The Key”- The girls in school are making hoodies for the soldiers in war instead of learning.

I would also research how women are treated today and compare it to the book.
